ILWU applauds Australia’s solidarity with US workers19 May 2006By Paddy Crumlin - National Secretary
Thanks to all those involved in the successful Day of Action against rogue US employer Blue Diamond Dear Comrades, I'd like to thank everyone involved in the Blue Diamond campaign and international day of action. I delivered a PowerPoint presentation on our campaign activities in Australia and New Zealand to 400 ILWU delegates at the ILWU International Convention in Vancouver. The presentation of the activity was met with a standing and sustained ovation, which included 4 of the Blue Diamond workers on the rostrum. The PowerPoint is on the MUA website and includes numerous photos of both rank and file and officials from all participating unions. The letter from the Managing Director of Scalzo Food Industries condemning the action of Blue Diamond was in itself received with a sustained ovation. Your work has not only been overwhelmingly appreciated it has inspired the Convention and is in the greatest traditions of international solidarity. The presentation was the lead in to a march of over 600 ILWU, Teamster and other Canadian workers to the Safeway's Supermarket, which sells Blue Diamond almonds. The demonstration took place in front of a Teamsters semi trailer used for organising work where the rally heard songs of the labour movement and further speeches from Jim Spinosa and other labour leaders including ITF General Secretary David Cockroft. I had the great pleasure to speak last in honour of the appreciated campaign by the MUA, MUNZ, RTBU, TWU, CFMEU, Union Solidarity and ACTU. Copies of the Rally flyer and Sharan Burrow's letter to the supplier were made available at the Convention and were quickly snapped up. ?Again on behalf of the Blue Diamond workers and the ILWU Convention I have been asked to pass on their deep appreciation and gratitude for our activities. We must use these first successes to continue to apply pressure for these workers facing tremendous struggle. I am giving a major address to the Convention tomorrow including Howard's anti union anti worker legislation and know similar solidarity for our struggle will be pledged formally by the Convention Congratulations again comrades.
