Anti war film documents 2003 peace marches

When over 80 percent of Australians said no to the war in Iraq and over a million marched in cities around Australia, their calls for peace went unheeded by the Howard Government.

A new anti-war video/DVD documents the thoughts and feelings of a range of people who attended the February, 2003 peace rallies including Bill Leak, cartoonist for the Australian newspaper, Dave Burgess, who along with a friend painted NO WAR on the Sydney Opera House, Merlin Luck from Big Brother, Ian Cohen and others.

Bill Leak articulates his anger and dismay at the Howard Government decision. "Have you ever noticed how often Howard says "I speak on behalf of ALL Australians when I say...(whatever)' He's never happier than he is when claiming to be 'speaking on behalf of all Australians'. When 80 per cent of the Australian people were opposed to the war in Iraq and a million or so of them marched in all our cities to voice their protest - THAT was Australian. But when Howard ignored them, too, and said he was sending the troops anyway and sucking up to Bush 'on behalf of ALL Australians' - THAT was un-Australian."

The documentary was recorded at an art auction hosted by comedians from the CNNNN TV comics to raise funds for the When The World Said No To War project. It's a piece of Australian history which makes you feel truly proud to be Australian and part of the global opposition to war.

When The World Said No To War, a project dedicated to the spirit of the 30 million people who took part in the February 2003 demonstrations, is a photographic exhibition, education forum and book scheduled to open in Sydney in February 2005 to coincide with the second anniversary of the demonstrations.
