Sailing Tall
Life member Max Wood has published an autobiography, Sailing Tall: Around the world on the square-rigged Passat (1946-1948).
At the end of WWII, teenager Max was determined to go to sea. He signed on as a boy on Everard's Serenity.
But his first love was sail, a dream he realised a few months later.
Just how he became a crew member of one of the most famous sailing ships, the Passat, is the opening for his book Sailing Tall, which tells of his time aboard the square-rigged ship on her voyage around the world between 1946 and 1948.
The author captures the good and bad times in his two years under sail. There was much humour contrasting sharply with the fears and, at times, terror. But there was also pride.
There are not many people who went to sea on a working sailing ship left to tell their story, and this is a first hand record of a way of life that is so different to steam or other ships and yet has so much in common. (Shipping Today and Yesterday, May 2004)

Radiothon
3CR 855AM, Melbourne's most independent and outspoken community radio station, today announced its target of $160,000 for the 2005 Radiothon.
The slogan for the Radiothon, Breaking through the Static - a Voice of Dissent, refers to the need for independent media voices in Australia.
Current federal Liberal government reforms - industrial relations law, cross media ownership laws and the ASIO bill - threaten to erode the rights and dignity of many Australians and undermine the independence of our media.
3CR is unique in Melbourne with outspoken industrial and reporting from those on the ground, giving voice to workers and promoting the rights of workers.
So support independent media in Australia and DONATE to 3CR!
