Working Class Idol

By Maritime Union of Australia

Do you work in the maritime industry and also work in television, theatre or film?
Have you done so in the past?
Do you dream of doing so in the future?

Back in the fifties a bunch of theatre and film workers got jobs under the hook on the Sydney waterfront. They started making films by wharfies about wharfies for wharfies — and the union. Political works. Working class films. The union then commissioned them to produce work and, before long, the WWF film unit was set up. These films are still used today by television producers and film makers.

Now 50 years on the union is searching among its members for people with the talent and political passion to be the new MUA film unit.

Here’s How You Enter:

• get your entry form from the union rooms or our website then beg, borrow or hire a digital or video camera and make a short film (maximum 6 minutes) about your union at work.
• Mark your entry “MUA Idol” and post or deliver it to National Office in Sydney by March 15, 2005
Every entry short-listed will also receive a copy of Fighting Films: A History of the WWF Film Unit and a collection of the films on DVD or VHS. So even if you’ve only ever made home movies or enjoyed taking still photographs, give it a go.

1st Prize
The winner will join the union delegation to Los Angeles to film an international gathering of mining and maritime workers in May 2005 and on to Cuba to film May Day. He or she will also receive a union scholarship to study film-making courses at TAFE .

2nd Prize
A union scholarship to study film-making at TAFE in your nearest city.

3rd Prize
A union scholarship for a short film-making course at a community college

Judging Panel
Left wing film maker Tom Zubrycki, Melbourne film-maker and former SBS TV commissioning editor John Hughes, Dr Lisa Milner, author of Fighting Films, Norma Disher, from the original WWF Film Unit, MUA National Secretary Paddy Crumlin and Deputy National Secretary Jim Tannock.

Conditions of Entry
You must be a financial member, life member or MUA staff.
Entry forms with full details are available on the MUA website or from your local branch.
