It is with much regret that I advise of the unexpected death of life member Ronald (Ron) Thompson.
Born in Susannah Place in The Rocks, now the Susannah Place Museum, on the shores of Sydney Harbour, Ron always had a deep-seated desire to follow in the footsteps of his father and go to sea.
After marrying and starting a family and fulfilling his obligations to National Service, he gained employment as a plumber working on ships and in the building industry.
Ron got away to sea in the late seventies, shipping out of Sydney for many years before moving to Lake Macquarie, near Newcastle, which later became his home port.
Always taking a great interest in the politics of the working class, he was an active participant in political gatherings, such as the annual May Day march.
After being fortunate enough to sail with my father-in-law on his last voyage on the Iron Yandi, Ron enjoyed a very active retirement, being a member of the Newcastle Maritime Union Veteran's Association, travelling the world and also contributing to the oral history of the Susannah Place Museum.
Ron died in March leaving behind his wife of almost 49 years, Iris, son Paul, daughter Lee and two grandsons.
On behalf of the family I would like to thank the veterans and all the members who attended his funeral. His family have given me the responsibility of scattering his ashes from his last ship at sea. He will be sadly missed.
