Wharfies, seafarers and dockers and deckhands joined captains of industry, union officials, harbourmasters and politicians, more than 1000 in all, to mourn the loss of one of the nation's greatest union leaders, former national president of the Seamen's Union of Australia John Brennan in October.
Those attending included ACTU Secretary Greg Combet, MUA National Secretary Paddy Crumlin, former Seamen's Union secretary Pat Geraghty, AMWU secretary Doug Cameran, CFMEU Secretary John Maitland, TLC Secretary Gary Kennedy, friends and family, Eulogies were provided by Paddy Crumlin, Greek Community leader and life-long friend Nick Tsilious and lifetime comrade MUA Veterans Secretary Bill Bodenham who sadly followed John only weeks later (See p10).
After the funeral at the Newcastle Crematorium, Beresfield, his comrades gave John Brennan a wake in Newcastle Panthers' main auditorium, which was recently named in his honour.
Only months earlier the club was the venue for a special testimonial for John Brennan. (see Here's to You Comrade, MWJ, August/September).
