About the Hydrocarbons Division

The Australian Offshore & Gas Industry is located in Bass Strait Victoria, the Northwest Shelf in Western Australia and Timor Sea off Northern Territory. Australia is fortunate in having a large offshore oil & gas industry, one that is destined to grow enormously over the next few years as other fields come on line.

Australia has also concluded an agreement with Timorese in regard to the development of the Timor Gap. This area, in this past, was jointly administered between Australia and Indonesia and the Maritime Union will be working very closely with the Timorese Unions and Government to ensure the mutual interest of both of our countries and unions in exploiting job opportunities, training and the like.

The types of vessels employed in the industry, of which the MUA has an involvement, includes mobile offshore drilling units (MODU's), drill ships, floating production facilities, support vessels, anchor handling tug support vessels (AHTS), seismic survey vessels, standby vessels, and specialist vessels that will include pipelay barges and diving support vessels.

The industry is the large employer of Australian seafarers and drivers and provides growing opportunities in terms of employment for Australians in the future. The Maritime Union is developing training arrangements to keep Australian seafarers in the Australian offshore oil and gas industry at the cutting edge of world best practice in issues of skills and competencies.

The Maritime Union has worked hard to ensure that the industry that can be inherently dangerous is a safe place to work.
