Merchant Mariners' Day

This Merchant Navy Day the Sydney Branch is holding a ceremony at Mosman cenotaph at 11am September 3. It is not expressly organised by the MUA but we have been consulted.
The branch has assisted in getting the plaque up for the permanent display.

It reads in part:

Australian Merchant Navy:

In remembrance of the men and women of the merchant navy whose sacrifice helped to secure and preserve our freedom and prosperity, and of the many sailors whose only known grave is the sea.

The proclamation of Merchant Navy day on September 3 has impacted upon the long held World Maritime Day (usually the end of September) event. This year we will celebrate Merchant Navy Day  at the Mosman event and make this an annual event where a plaque is laid / ceremony held to recognise the contribution of seafarers during the war and to continue to hold World Maritime Day as a broader function at the end of September.
