Trico takes ITF to court
TRICO Marine Services has launched legal action against the International Transport Workers' Federation, according to David Osler of Lloyds List The Gulf war escalates as rogue company Trico intensifies its fight to keep unions off limits. ITF affiliates and the International Federation of Chemical, Energy and Mineworkers have been targetting the US-based offshore industry supply company in the long-running international campaign for union rights. According to the two international trade secretariats, Trico employees in the US can be sacked for joining the Offshore Mariners United union. Trico denies the allegations. Lloyds List reports that the legal action in London's commercial court comes after the failure of a recent appeal against a decision in the ITF's favour by the US National Labour Relations Board. ITF general secretary David Cockroft said: "In many ways we are quite flattered by this court action. It clearly shows that international trade union solidarity can worry multinational employers. "This is an issue of fundamental importance to the entire international trade union movement and the ITF will defend this case vigorously."
