Douglas Gadebo, Assistant General Secretary of the PNG Maritime Union was a special guest of the Branch for this years May Day. He joined around 360 MUA members and families, including retired members on the march and for the celebrations that followed.

The invitation to our close northern brothers and sisters was a follow on from the introduction of the Brisbane - Port Moresby sister Port arrangements.

Douglas has relayed his gratitude to the Branch, as there is no official May/Labour Day celebrations in his country.

May Day this year still resonates with many in the labour movement. There are many challenges, not in the least the economic downturn, continual agitation and protests to see the disbanding of the ABCC while some of our Brothers and Sisters in state-based unions fight for wage parity in line with other States.

The Branch would like to thank members for their participation and congratulates many of our veterans who have not retired from the struggle.

Of course the day would not be enjoyable if it was not for the volunteers who helped in the organisation; preparation of the floats and setting up at the RNA showgrounds.

Many thanks to the BBQ kings, Aaron Porter and Stan Southward; Bushy Lang for towing the float and Stephen Healy for working tirelessly behind "The Jump".

The Branch is also looking forward to viewing the many moving and still images as produced by Joe "Scoop" Carr.

Thanks to any other members who provided assistance. The Branch still has May Day T-shirts for sale at the Branch office, should members wish to purchase the latest design.
