The Maritime Union Tasmania's Branch centres on the key transport linking the island with the mainland, the Spirit of Tasmania ferry service. It employs around 200 local IRs, caterers and cooks and office workers and is the biggest employee of seafarers in Australia. Two shipping lines carry cargo trade across the Tasman out of Devonport and Hobart is homeport for icebreaker Auroris Australls which carries goods and research crew to the Antartic during the summer months.
